Piano Tuning and Repair — A Personal Perspective
Piano tuning and repair has always been more than just a business to me. I have been a piano tuner/technician serving the greater San Jose area for over 30 years — tuning, repairing, and adjusting all brands and styles of pianos. As a child, I loved the sound of the piano and started taking piano lessons when I was 7. I also loved to tinker with almost anything mechanical and quickly learned to appreciate the intricate workings of a piano as I would watch our family piano tuner lay out his special tools and carefully tune and adjust each of the 88 notes on the family piano. At age 16, I took an interest in composing, and have had the privilege of producing the music scores for several films over the years.
My training as a piano tuner and technician began in the early 1970s. I apprenticed with a highly skilled, third-generation piano craftsman. Carl taught me the fine points of piano tuning, voicing, and action regulating, as well as the various skills required to repair and maintain virtually any make and model of piano. As a mentor, Carl not only taught me what I needed to know to be successful in the piano servicing trade, but he also instilled in me a true respect for the history and evolution of the modern piano.
I count it a privilege that a substantial number of long-term customers in the greater San Jose, Los Gatos, Saratoga and Santa Cruz areas have entrusted the care of their piano to me over the years. Each of the thousands of pianos that I have tuned is unique — as individual as the needs and tastes of the people that own them. No two pianos are exactly alike. Each piano truly has its own “personality” and I find the process of bringing a piano into perfect tune and proper mechanical function to be very satisfying. Whether it’s an old upright or the highest quality concert grand piano, I always strive to get the best possible sound and performance out of each instrument.
